This was a very nice guesthouse in which to stay while I waited for my transport to be ready to elsewhere on the island. The staff were very nice and I'm glad I was able to come to Svalbard and have a place to stay in the middle of winter, from which one day I could watch the northern lights. 🙂

This hotel offers budget accommodation on the Arctic Ocean island of Svalbard. Communal facilities include a kitchen and TV lounge. Snowmobile safaris, dog sledding and glacier walks can be arranged.

At Coal Miners’ Cabins, guest accommodations are located in annex buildings. Each have access to shared bathrooms, kitchen, laundry facilities and a common living room. All rooms feature a mountain view

The room was comfy and the view was nice. It came with a private bathroom which is a must if we travel with my wife or with the kids. The kitchen was in front of our room, so we had to "enjoy" the noises and/or the scent of food being prepared, but that's not the biggest problem in the world, so we could live with that. The staff was really kind and helpful too. The location of the hotel is 2 KM from the main area (it's technically a different city/area maybe, called Nybyen). But we like to walk especially in this wonderful area, but it's good to know if you are just planning your stay. The breakfast was simple but we liked it, and we could eat enough for our needs even to be able to hike 14 km on daily average without any problems.

Looking for a hostel?

Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.

Great place to stay! Private room was lovely and the facilities were very good. Only slight downside is the walk into town but if you are doing tours they pick you up from the hostel so it’s not that bad. Would highly recommend staying here!

If coming to Svalbard this is by far the only budget accomodation available. Bearing in mind that it has no real competition, it is still nevertheless a very good hostel. Breakfast pancakes are great, staff are friendly, it is fairly sociable. The rooms are somewhat small, but the kitchen/social area is spacious enough, and in any case if you come to Svalbard for the bedroom then there's really little point.

The place has a lot of atmosphere. The bed narrow but perfectly comfortable. Very good breakfast. Never needed to wait for using the shared bathroom. The hotel reminded me a lot of an Australian backpacker hostel.

One of the best hostels I've stayed in. Staff were so friendly and let me stay in the breakfast room till my taxi arrived. I highly recommend this hostel and will definitely be booking them if I get the chance to visit again. :) Free tea and coffee all day were a plus too!
